The Virginia Ten Miler Color Guard Celebrates 25 Years

Today, we celebrate a remarkable milestone as we honor the 25th Anniversary of the Virginia Ten Miler Color Guard.

Beginning after the September 11th attacks, Lynchburg's own Veteran Marine Sergeant and two-time Purple Heart recipient Steve Bozeman, established the color guard opening one of Virginia's most treasured running traditions with dignity, honor, and respect. Through changing seasons, thousands of runners, and countless memories made along the streets of Lynchburg, the Virginia Ten Miler Color Guard has stood as a symbol of patriotism, service, and community pride.

Since its beginning, this distinguished tradition has reminded us that before the race begins, of the values that unite us: freedom, sacrifice, perseverance, and teamwork. The presentation of our nation's colors and the many other commemorative flags carried by the guard serve as a powerful reminder that every step taken today is made possible by those who have served and continue to serve our country and our communities.

Over the last 25 years, members of the Color Guard have represented veterans, active-duty military personnel, first responders, and civic organizations with unwavering professionalism and commitment. Their presence has become an enduring part of the Virginia Ten Miler experience, inspiring runners and spectators alike.

As we mark this silver anniversary, we honor not only those carrying the colors today, but every individual who has proudly participated in this tradition since its inception. Their dedication has helped create a legacy that has become an integral part of the Virginia Ten Miler story.
